Although Helen has always enjoyed painting and received encouragement from her art teachers in elementary school and in college, it wasn't until 1974 that she actually took painting lessons while living in Huntington Beach, CA. She painted for less than a year, then hung up her brushes until after her retirement so she could get her degrees in education.
After moving to The Villages, Florida, in 2002, she resumed her interest in painting. She joined the Villages Art League, where eventually she was inspired by other artists to show her artwork. She also joined the Visual Arts Association of The Villages and participated in their judged and juried shows and Artists Round the Square shows.
Her subjects of interest are landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes, and more recently, portraits. She has painted portraits of most of her ancestors and several family members. Her work can usually be seen at the La Galleria in the La Hacienda Recreation Center, a judged and juried show, and other show locations throughout the year in The Villages.
Helen is happily exploring her talents in several media (colored pencil, watercolor, oils, and pastels), and various subject matters. Although her art has begun to win awards, she feels that she has just scratched the surface of all that she wants to learn about painting.
Helen is a member of the Villages Art League and the Visual Arts Association, where she has served as their Newsletter Editor and as a member of the Executive Committee, and Nan Klein's Colored Pencil Workshops. She has been the co-chair of the VAL's Annual Summer Art Festival and VAL's Annual Artists' Showcase.
